SELF check: Questions to ask your doctor

Dr Jo Wainer, director of the Gender and Medicine Research Unit at Monash University, suggests seven questions to ask your doctor about your own situation:

Q1    Do men and women experience this problem differently?

Q2    Do the symptoms differ for women compared with men?

Q3    Is the outcome likely to be different because I am a woman/man?

Q4    Has the medication you are prescribing been trialled on women (or men)?

Q5    Does the operation have different outcomes for women compared with men?

Q6    Am I more likely to get better because I am female/male?

Q7    Do men and women need different doses of the medication?
