2. Tai Chi

For those who dislike traditional exercise

TARGET Suffering from arthritis, depression, back problems, obesity? Recovering from an injury or simply stiff from ageing and haven’t touched your toes in ages? This ancient martial art, reputedly created by a Taoist monk, could be the answer!

CLAIMS Tai chi is a slow and deliberate set of flowing movements that provide moderate aerobic and low-impact exercise. The benefits including sleeping better, having a healthier immune and circulatory system, stress control, increased mobility and gentle toning of your muscles and joints. It may take a few months, but expect to feel more relaxed, have improved balance and coordination, reduced feelings of anxiety and depression, and a reduced risk of falls.

THE GOOD It’s an excellent gentle exercise and works out your body and soul. Many breast-cancer survivors find it a great way to boost their lymphatic system. Bad back? It’s fantastic for mobilising and strengthening the spine.

THE BAD For the first four months you’ll be focused on learning the sequence of 108 movements, so it’s a long-term health investment rather than an instant fix.

ESSENTIALS Wear flat-soled shoes and loose, comfortable clothing such as track pants to do 60 to 90 minutes twice-weekly. Class sizes can range from 10 to 25 people and beginners’ courses run for four to five months.

CONTACT The Taoist Tai Chi Society of Australia offers 90-minute classes Australia-wide, except in the Northern Territory and Tasmania. Cost per adult is from $38 per month including all available classes, plus a one-off $25 registration fee. The first class is obligation-free.
