1. Step Into Life

For those who enjoy the outdoors

TARGET Suits men and women of all ages and fitness levels. The average age of participants is 42 and sessions can include a huge variety of fitness levels, with clients training at their own pace.

CLAIMS Hate gyms? You can incorporate regular training and fresh air. How about a Stretch n Flex course? It’s a combination of yoga, Pilates, stretching and core-strength training run by outdoor fitness experts Step into Life. You’ll be working your abdominals, improving your balance and boosting your cardiovascular fitness. After three sessions a week for two weeks in an outdoor group training session, expect to be sleeping better, feel more positive and be “firmer”. Within 12 weeks, expect to have a good base fitness, formed an exercise habit, lost centimetres and more defined muscles.

ESSENTIALS Sessions are held in local parks, schools or reserves. Wear comfortable clothing, runners and a hat. Bring a water bottle and tell your trainer if you have injuries. They’ll provide most of the training equipment required, although you’ll be asked to purchase a Swiss ball to do home workouts to help your core strength. Session prices start at $12, with 10-18 people doing one-hour group training.

THE GOOD Step Into Life has a 90% retention rate because sessions are fun and not too expensive. You’ll be exercising, enjoying the fresh air and making new friends. The first session is always free and a personal trainer advises which session is best for you. Trainers also provide fortnightly feedback and your fitness is reassessed every six weeks. It’s like having a personal trainer at a group session price.

THE BAD If bad weather hits, alternative indoor and undercover venues are allocated. For real results, you’ll need to stick to three sessions a week for 12 weeks. Make it through those first few weeks and you’ll never look back!
