According to Dr Tim Crowe, Senior Lecturer (Nutrition) at Deakin University, one of the main habits of people who successfully lose weight is that they eat breakfast every day.

Here's what others in the know have to say...

Dr Amanda Sainsbury-Salis
"I ate my way slim."

Sue Radd
"Have three regular meals per day, based on minimally processed, simple whole foods which you have personally prepared."

Catherine Saxelby
"A heavy dinner meal stills 'sits' uncomfortably in the stomach creating a feeling of fullness the next morning. Eating a lighter meal at night or eating earlier can make breakfast more appetising. So can a brisk walk or swim before breakfast.

"Breakfast doesn't have to be complicated - I like the combo of cereal, fruit and yoghurt, which is quick and convenient. I like to eat muesli myself but any whole grain or high-fibre cereal is fine. Vary the fruit depending on what's in season. Add a couple of spoons of yoghurt and milk, and it's all there! Good for fibre, vitamins and low-GI carbs!

"If you really do need to dash out, make up a sandwich the night before and leave it in the fridge. Eat it on the way to work with a juice, milk drink or a tea."

Eating smart
We should have at least five servings of vegetables and four servings of fruit every day, and there is not better time to start than breakfast.

Work vegetables into your morning meal by making an omelette with scrambled egg whites and leftover veggies from last night’s dinner. Wash it down with a fruit smoothie by blending one cup of fresh fruit to ½ cup fruit juice, ½ cup plain low fat yoghurt and one cup of ice.

This low-carb breakfast idea follows the principles of the Atkins diet, which claims a devoted celebrity following. Best of all, you’ll have consumed part of your daily fruit and veggie intake before leaving the front door!
